Strict Governing Hands: Miami Art Basel
Strict Governing Hands is choreography that captures physical reactions the body has to an unprocessed internal history. Using Hildegard Von Bingen's compositions merged with contemporary club music, i'm identifying concepts of martyrdom and a flee from controlled systems of power. The performance is example of the struggle to maintain physical agency under strict governing technology by taping the cell phone of the user to the body while listening to the track dictate cues. The audience was given a business card with a map locating where the performance was held on Miami Beach, as well as a phone number. When called, the audience would gain access to a conference call in which the crashing waves would harmonize with the interference on the other line. The audience and the performers were then connected by the same faulty system that directed them. Commissioned by SIGNAL 2014.
